In Missouri, hunters are obligated by law to make all reasonable effort to persue and harvest wounded game, however that obligation does authorize trespass.





If property is fully marked, by sign or purple paint, being on the property without permission is the highest degree of misdemeanor.





If property is not marked (and property line marking is not necessary to establish trespass - it is the obligation of each individual to always know where they are and that they are there legally) it is a lower degree misdemeanor.

No, not legal if they do not want you there.....it is called trespassing.

I always contact the land owner and ask permission.


I've had to retrieve a couple critters across fence lines.





I got to a point where in researching hunting locations to stop in and get to know land owners of the neighboring areas. A couple have given me permission to hunt on their posted land. Many land owners are happy to have people harvesting deer, don't be afraid of doing some extra research getting names and phone numbers of the neighbors.
It is trespassing to enter someone's land to retreive a wounded animal of any kind





So be a responsible person -- find out who owns the land (perhaps the police can tell you) and ask permission to retrieve the deer. If you're nice about it - the land owner will almost certainly say yes.
in N.M. you can not retrieve legally it now matter the distance with out written permission

where i hunt we have a agreement with the land owners around us. but im a good shot and i drop them in theyer tracks

However ';some'; states have the 100 yard or in site law, that allows you to retrieve dead game as long as it is no more that 100 yards from the property line.
It varies from state to state. Check your state laws. Here you are allowed to track a wounded animal wherever it leads.
