Everyone and their dog is going to recommend a 30-30 like a Marlin 336 or similar. Not a bad option, but if you really want a gun that can be considered a ';brush gun'; with some muscle behind it I suggest getting a Browning BLR (Browning Lever Rifle) in 270 Winchester,7mm-08 Remington,308 or 30-06. With a full power modern cartridge you get better velocities, better bullet selections and a range that isn't limited to 150 yards in case you find that open spot along a fence line or power line. With a 270 or other cartridge you can get 300 yard shots and still have good terminal ballistics and the BLRs are almost as accurate as a bolt action-just get a decent scope and you are golden.
The shot that really matters in hunting is the first one,and I've never needed a second one yet;that has to do with right cartridge and shot placement. 30-06 or 270 makes that a lot more manageable than a 30-30 does.
I've always used bolt actions in 30-06, my hunting partner has his BLRs I have A-Bolts

30-30 winchester is the best all round close range rifle you can get, ammo is cheap and widely available. It is perfect for the bushy terrain and in the woods. For shooting deer at a distance a 243 is your best choice cause bullets are cheap and are sold everywhere and is very effective at around 300 yrds.
Im a hunter from New Zealand and we have descent big reds,I myself would have to say you would be hard pressed to go past the Sako243 using hollow point, boat tail projectiles will drop just about any thing at close range but also is proven for long distance with maybe a slight change in grains,This way you may be able to broaden your hunting areas with confidence. I use a fixed 4x40 weaver scope. To us kiwis its all about the meat so obviously placement of shot is paramount, trust me check it out and you wont be disappointed!! The hole set up would cost about $3500 NZD
I would look at a Marlin 30-30. Your longest shot is going to be about 100yards and it is maneuverable enough to get through those thickets without too much trouble. I say Marlin over the Winchester just because you can more easily put a scope on a Marlin.
Marlin in 30-30 caliber.*.. Use the 170 grain bullet for Best Performance and Accuracy.* Maximum effective range with a scope is 300 yards.*
its been voted upon many times that th 30-06 is the can do all round and is my personal favorite. you can hunt anything in n. america with it.
you can never go wrong with a 30-06 springfield. I myself use a remmington 700.
