Salting the tail of the deer or any other hide, pelt, skin, or etc. is only a process of removing the moisture from the skin. Moisture is part of the equation added to bacteria that causes the epidermis to begin to rot. By drying the skin, you put it into a state of suspension. Once, if ever, it is re-hydrated, the deterioration process will begin again. Leaving salt on too long does nothing more once the hide is completely dry. However... If you wish to preserve the hide, a natural and quite common preservative is Borax which you can find in any grocery store in the laundry detergent department. It is an additive usually added to a washing machine for cleaner clothes. Taxidermists use Borax (not Boraxo) for preserving the skins of birds, snakes, small animals, and the tails of.....yup, even deer. How long do i leave salt on a deer tail?
Candy, i'll tell you what it did to him
It fed him
It gave his mom the tail

--- Not sure on the salt, but my bitterness and anger towards the anti's is coming out this evening.
-- Hurricane Ike ruined early Dove season for me so Im extra upset...
Crunch. We use salt to roll up the hides in before we can transport them into town.
I THINK salt is just a stop-gap.
That darn tail can't cost that much to have tanned.
(wont stink as bad ether)
